Legality vs. Taxes
A strange thought went through my head as I was talking to one of my co-workers. The taxation of vice. Even more than that, but the taxation of what is illegal from a federal perspective.Take medical marijuana for instance. It's not legal. At least the US government says it's not. It's a schedule 1 controlled substance according to the DEA.But California disagrees. You can set up a business -- a legitimate business -- selling the stuff. And if you're making money you pay taxes. Payroll taxes. Social Security. Sales tax. Money all around. While on one hand you say something is illegal, the government uses the other to collect taxes. What type of message does that send? Who's more dependent on this "drug?" The government or the prescription holder?Makes you think, eh?
