Checked Baggage - A Rant
I went to San Francisco with a backpack and a small bag for all my clothes and my work laptop.Yes, the work laptop is relegated to the bag with clothes. So it goes. The problem arose upon coming back. With all the ginormous roller bags that people are stuffing into the overhead bins, suddenly people like me (who packed small) are screwed. So of course I was able to check my bag all the way home to Cleveland, but what are the chances that it'll make it all the way there?Checking it. That was free. So, who exactly is winning here?People are forced to lug the huge bags all over the airport. The gate attendants are forced to gate check bags for a third of the plane -- for free of course. The flight attendants are forced to deal with people and their huge, heavy, overloaded bags in the overhead compartments. Why? Just because someone had the bright idea to charge for checked bags. The bags are still getting there and they are getting there for free still.I wonder who did the math in the board meeting this was all decided in. It's like playing chess without thinking a single move ahead.Nothing's different except people are more pissed off than before.--As a postscript, the bag actually made it to Cleveland and was on the baggage claim. I guess my setting my expectation so low that getting the bag in one piece is considered a passing grade makes me jump for joy.
