W8DFL QSL Cards - 5/2/2011
We have a cool mixed bag here today -- I'll start with the first one alphabetically: OX5BW.I'm guessing this young kid, Paul, is in the Air Force stationed at Thule AFB up in Greenland. It's one of the northernmost military bases in the world -- the only one further up that I know of is Alert that has a far smaller population.I find Paul's writing cute (Paul, if you're reading this I'm sorry... pipe up if you're out there though) -- it's just perfect cursive like they teach you in school. The mix of the cursive and the TXTing lingo makes for a jarring combination that I just can't get over. :-) "... and hope to cuagn soon."At least it was October when it's "nice" as opposed to the winter. heh.I'll just contrast the cursive to this one from Denmark:I love the old flow-y cursive of yore. You don't see it as much now outside of calligraphy. Hell, I block print almost everything so I'm as much to blame as anyone else. :-?I love this one for the UFO. I also love it for the way they have the frequency. If you get enough of the cards on each of the bands you get free admission to EVOLUON, whatever that happens to be. (They claim it's a "mankind and progress" exhibit, but I'm thinking more Close Encounters of the Third Kind to tell you the truth) They had six different versions printed up! One for each of the main bands plus one blank one (the lowest PW2EVO on the front) for anything else. The back varies as well! The color layer is specific for the band! I guess Phillips really ponied up for this setup! The last one is from the evil empire: USSR.I'm sure the government was handing these out as a form of propaganda to spread around the world. The 60th anniversary of the state. I guess it was sitting around since it only went out in 1979 instead of 77... but I suppose you have to use what you have.My brother was only 2 1/2 months old at the time this was sent. It's interesting to think of what was going on at the time. How much things change and how much things stay the same.Today I pulled out an old office picture of a coworker. She was with ICOM since at least 2003 and now it's 8 years on. It's amazing to think what's gone on since then. How people change and what each of us have experienced. I think pictures aren't as much to capture the moment but to prompt us to think of how much we've moved from there. They provide a baseline to make the delta off of.[smugmug url="http://photos.vec.com/hack/feed.mg?Type=gallery&Data=16877664_rkxNMg&format=rss200" imagecount="100" start="1" num="100" thumbsize="Th" link="lightbox" captions="false" sort="true" window="true" smugmug="true" size="L"]
