RIP Steve Jobs

I was planning something else for today. The news broke moments ago and I lost my train of thought.I've done a lot of ranting about how business can be poorly managed. I'm going to turn the table now.Steve Jobs was a visionary. He knew how to manage -- when to micromanage, when to hire the best and delegate.Apple is not a company that has been run by a committee. Apple has been a company driven by a man with a singular vision who surrounded himself with people who are just as committed to the vision they shared with him.If something was not good enough, he sent it back for more work. In fact there is no such thing as good enough with him -- things needed to be right. Right is something that is missed so often in the way things get run. Things that aren't right but are merely good enough tend to suck.Suck?Yeah. Suck. If something's bad you avoid it. If something is good enough you go and buy the bloody thing and proceed to bitch up a storm about it when you stub your toe on a poorly implemented "feature."Something that works tends more to just get out of the way.Back to Apple though...Apple is selling more PCs (especially if you're counting the iPad) than anyone else. They are more expensive, but people buy them anyway. Why is that?Some people I'm sure buy it for the glowing piece of fruit on the back of the case. Most people buy them simply because they tend to work more often than the other computers.Why are the more expensive though? Well, for one Apple does have a better profit margin. But they also use better parts. The fit and finish of the Apple stuff I have is uniformly better than the non-Apple computers. The laptops don't squeak and twist when you torque them; they are solid. The phones work like phones for one (unlike the crap Windows Mobile phone I had to have for a spell)... but they also started a new paradigm on how phones should work.Why?Vision.It's like a "build it and they will come" mentality.Build something you want and other folks will likely want it too.Vision.Steve had it in spades.
