Trap shooting: First time
Ennie and I were guested into the Cascade shooting range for a few games of trap shooting.Other than shooting my co-worker's 20-gauge with some hand-thrown clays I've never shot shot out of a shotgun. (I shot a few slugs out of my brother's pump-action Remington 870) To make matters more interesting I never shot my dad's old Remington 1100 ever.Last night I watched a few YouTubes on stripping the gun and tore into it. It wasn't as intimidating as I had expected it to be thankfully. As expected my dad put it away in a very clean state -- but I wanted to re-lube it with some fresh oil since I don't think it's been shot for at least a decade. So today we went and shot some trap!I gotta tell ya, it's a lot of fun!My high score was 12 out of 25. Not winning, but not too embarrassing. The gun shot great! That being said, it's choked way too wide for trap. It's choked for skeet, which is the second-widest choke. I should have been shooting modified or improved modified for the game we were playing. In trap the clays are going generally away from you so if you're shooting with a wide pattern you can be on target but not get a hit because the pellets could be way too spread out.Check out the WIkipedia article on chokes it for more background. If I was shooting a tighter choke I'd have more than 50% more effective range. It was fun none the less! Now I just need to get a better gun for the job. :-P Then a reloading press for shotshell.
