Taking Google for granted
In the past couple of weeks Google has made a couple of announcements. They are no longer ding Google Apps for Your Domain for free (for small installations). They are also discontinuing ActiveSync access for the grandfathered free domains. In many ways one goes through life with things just being there. You pass things every day not giving a second though to how something is the way it is. It's just there. Even the thought of making it for the first time becomes an absurdity. That's the way I feel about the Google a lot of times. Here is a company that, for better or worse, has a big hand in making the internets work. They have search obviously, but how many other services do you use every day that you think nothing of? Gmail? Blogger? Picasa? Docs? YouTube? Android? In the end I have to say that a company has the right to make money... it's just an interesting realization that you have to reevaluate your decisions. It's easy to compromise when you're getting something for, essentially, nothing. When that something starts to have a cost, it shakes things up.
