The FAA closing some towers
The news hit the wire today that the FAA is shutting down the control towers -- 149 of them to be precise. One of the airports losing their tower is KCGF -- Cuyahoga County back in Cleveland. All sorts of folks are up in arms with the fear of safety.Bunk.KCGF, for instance, averages 185 operations per day. KCLE, by comparison, has 515 a day.So, KCGF loses it's tower. So what?
- KCLE, only 19 miles away, will handle approach, departure, and clearance delivery like they already do.
- The tower is already closed at night and all hell has not broken out.
- The pilots will handle talking to each other on CTAF on radio like they do for thousands of uncontrolled airports in the country.
- CTAF is part of standard pilot training
- ILS will still continue to operate.
- New GPS instruments deal with taxi situations better without ground
What happens? We, the tax payers, save a whole lot of money.
