Slut shaming

I was listening to Savage Love today on my walk over lunch and one of the calls was about an English chap who was quite the slut. He called it polyamory, but it was being a slut and his claim of poly didn't rung true. This really brought to mind the idea of slut. What does it mean to be a slut? And why does it have to be a bad thing?Of course this was a bit upside down since he was a guy. Guys, when they sleep around, are looked up to for the most part. Women, on the other hand, are shamed. What makes it bad for a woman to express her sexuality? Moreover, why is it that both genders shame girls for being "sluts?"Of course there are plenty of theories on the subject like anything worth discussing. The theory that I tend to agree with most is the idea that society really likes to control women's reproductive systems -- not just in this was even. If you look the world over there are restrictions placed on women that generally don't apply to men. The idea that a society's fecundity, as embodied by women and the comparative high cost to them, is collectively owned by that society seems to be pervasive. From shaming to burkas the theme is pervasive. If I'm a slut, I don't really cost society much as long as no one gets pregnant. On the other hand if a girl is a slut and gets pregnant then she's out of the pool for a while. You can probably tell from my tone what my views are. To crystallize it I have to say that everyone's body is their own. To try to control what they can do with their body either through laws or norms is stupid. If someone wants to be a slut (or anything else for that matter) because that's their drive at the moment, what's wrong with that? As long as they are being safe, sane, and consensual, how can it affect me? If it doesn't affect me, why do I get to have an opinion on the matter?
