Working at Amazon
There's been all the buzz about the NY Times article about working at Amazon. The talk of the horrors of working at Amazon are more than a little overblown. The truth, from my experience, is that you're work experience is more dependent on your manager than anything else.Sure, there are rough days. You have rough days no matter where you're working.Sure, when you're launching a product you'll have some long days. You might even have an overnight. But that's what you get in this line of work. The idea that you have new hire orientation isn't shocking. The idea that you'll have to pay back relocation expenses if you leave too soon after being hired is normal. The idea that you can give feedback on your co-workers (good and bad) is a good thing. Do you not want to be able to give feedback?!In all of the cases where I've seen folks dealing with personal issues -- both personal illnesses and family issues -- I've seen managers bend over backwards to make sure that things are OK. Even if it's hard for the rest of the project.I don't know. With a company as big as Amazon I'm sure if you look hard enough you'll find defective behavior. I've seen plenty of defective crap in small companies. In this case I've seen way less percentage wise at Amazon than anyplace else.Your mileage may vary.
