Why is now special?
There's been a buzz on a neighborhood forum (Nextdoor.com) about the boxy modern houses that are slowly getting integrated into the 'hood. Typically a developer will buy someone's side lot or a dilapidated house and replace it with the highest square-foot-per-dollar house they can put in. That's what the market demands.

I just took a walk around the neighborhood with En. We live in a 1906-built house and as we walked a few blocks we saw houses from all eras. I'm sure the ranches that went in during the 50's and 60's were looked upon with the same disdain as the modern houses are now. Or the small collection of California stucco houses that we walked past. How do those fit in?We don't live in a neighborhood that is homogeneous already. This is simple the neighborhood moving forward slowly. In 10 years time I predict that we'll be mostly the same. In 100? Your guess is as good as mine.At every moment here, we live in the snapshot of time of the present. We are not privileged enough to live at the pinnacle of our neighborhood because for each moment before of after it was just different. Was it better when my house was built in 1906? Was it better in the 60's? 80's? How is precisely now the best time that must be preserved.I enjoy the neighborhood right now. I'm sure tomorrow it'll be different -- but I'll still enjoy it. If I don't there's nothing tying me here.
