Serena vs. Osaka

Peeps on the internet (and in real life) backing Serena are, in my opinion, completely nuts.

I get that she’s a hero to many. But being a hero isn’t an excuse to act like a douche canoe.

I think an interesting corollary to think about is if Osaka is any less woman than Serena? Why is one woman more or less than another?

It’s not taking away anything from her record, but to simply elevate someone to “can do no wrong” status is silly. It’s as dumb as the idiots who defend every tweet that Trump has. The world has lost all nuance and it’s fucking pissing me off.

To move to a different sport, there was a time, 2005 give or take, when Michael Schumacher, one of the greatest drivers of all time, “crashed” in the last turn of qualifying at Monaco to spoil the laps of everyone else. He got shit for that. Rightly so.

Serena’s an amazing athlete. But that doesn’t absolve her of her sins. Not to mention all this comes off as really bad messaging to all the kids that look up to her. If you whine and moan enough you’ll get your way, if not on the court, but in the court of public opinion.

And I’m still kind of stupefied that this might be controversial in any way.
