Strand

We watched a video about the Dutch Strand Beest. Partway through I realized what that was — but from Hungarian.

In Hungarian a beach is a “strand” as well. Pronounced “shtruhnd.” I had one of those “holy shit” moments as I was able to fully translate this to “beach animal.”

It’s one of the loanwords from Germanic languages. I’ll have to do a deeper dive into this. Etymology is such a fascinating thing for me.
